The Health Risks of Leading A Too Sedentary Life

Providence, RI, January 27, 2022 -/DailyVoice/- For many Americans, sitting is part of our job. Yet it can have some serious consequences for your health.

Being too sedentary and sitting can raise your risk of uterine, colon, and breast cancers. Lack of exercise and a sedentary life doubles your risk of cardiovascular disease and death, according to the World Health Organization.

Sitting too long can have a real impact on your musculoskeletal health. When you sit too much, the core muscles that support your back begin to weaken. When the muscles are weak, you’re more likely to experience strained muscles and muscle spasms. Muscle imbalances due to lack of exercise can pull your spine out of alignment, causing chronic back pain and reduced range of motion.

“Having a balance between movement and rest throughout your day is important. If you’re sitting a lot, especially on a soft surface like a couch or in a car, you’ll sometimes want to support your back with a small pillow or specific lumbar support,” said Dr. Kristin Kolesar Fabris, president of the Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island and a chiropractor at Be Well Chiropractic in Providence, Rhode Island.

In terms of how to sit in a way that will minimize the impact to your back, particularly at a desk, the American Chiropractic Association offers the following guidelines: Don’t cross your legs. Your ankles should be directly in front of your knees; keep a small gap between the back of your knees and the front of your seat; your knees should be at or below the level of your hips; adjust the backrest of your chair to support your low- and mid-back or use a back support; relax your shoulders and keep your forearms parallel to the ground; and avoid sitting in the same position for long periods of time and take breaks and move your body.

Sitting less and being more active may also help you avoid depression and anxiety or reduce the symptoms of these conditions. According to Harvard Health Publishing, exercise improves nerve cell growth in the part of the brain that controls moods and triggers the release of endorphins, natural chemicals that improve your mood.

“If you sit a lot for work, maintaining a proper ergonomic workspace is important. You can visit a special website created by CSRI entitled StraughtenUpRI.com for more tips,” said Dr. Fabris. “You’ll also want to get adjusted regularly by your chiropractor to maintain proper spinal health.”

RI Chiropractors Weigh in on Replacing Your Home Office Chair

Providence, RI, November 04, 2021 -/DailyVoice/- With more and more people working from home, many home offices are getting more use than previously intended—particularly office chairs. That’s led many home workers to wonder at what point should they replace their old office chair with a new one.

“Many people wait until their office chair is showing wear and tear before entertaining the thought of getting a new one,” said Dr. Kristin Kolesar Fabris, president of the Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island and a chiropractor at Be Well Chiropractic & Health in Providence, RI. “The reality is you should make a decision on your current chair based more on its ergonomics than its current condition. A chair can look good and still do harm to your legs, back and neck.”

When it comes to selecting an ergonomic office chair for your home office, Dr. Fabris recommends an adjustable chair to customize settings that work for you. That starts with lumbar support.

The lumbar support must adjust to the curves of your back. This also goes for the back rest as well. You typically want the back rest to be between one foot and 19 inches wide.

A proper office chair also enables you to sit with your feet planted flat on the floor and your legs at a 90-degree angle. A chair height between 16 and 21 inches should work for most people. Remember, you also want your arms to be equal height with the desk’s surface. That’s why you want a chair with a height lever for easy adjustment.

Finally, there’s seat width. You want a chair with a width between 17 and 20 inches. Please keep in mind when you sit there should be a gap between two and four inches from the back of your knee to the chair.

“Following these guidelines will help you select a proper ergonomic office chair. Yet the real test is when you sit in the chair for an extended period of time,” said Dr. Fabris. “You will want to research the return policy for whomever you buy your new chair from. If your new chair doesn’t feel right after a day or so of extended seating, return it. Sure, you can make adjustments to height, etc. Sometimes it may not be the right chair. That’s why it’s encouraged to try these chairs out in the store first.”

Dr. Fabris adds, “For people with chronic back conditions, even a good office chair does not eliminate issues. You may want to consider a standing desk as sitting less can also help. Again, consult with a chiropractor is good start to finding the right balance between an ergonomic chair and standing.”

If you not currently seeing a chiropractor and want to explore how chiropractic can help, you can utilize the “Find A Doctor” feature on the Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island’s website, www.richiro.org.

RI Chiropractors on The Move for National Chiropractic Health Month’s Keep Moving! Theme

Middletown, RI, September 28, 2021 -/DailyVoice/- Each year, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) recognizes October as National Chiropractic Health Month (NCHM). The doctors of the Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island (CSRI), one of the oldest chiropractic associations in the country, recently announced its support of the theme for this year’s NCHM—Keep Moving!

“When it comes to the musculoskeletal system, you really do need to move it or lose it. That’s why NCHM’s Keep Moving! Theme for this year’s month is so timely, particularly after the pandemic has limited the movement of so many,” said Dr. Kristin Kolesar Fabris, president of CSRI and a chiropractor at Be Well Chiropractic in Providence, Rhode Island. “Movement was a big part of the Chiropractic Society of RI’s ‘Straighten Up, RI’ campaign from earlier in this year. We’re delighted to continue the theme of movement through National Chiropractic Health Month.”

Adds Dr. Fabris, “Movement, coupled with chiropractic treatments, strengthens overall musculoskeletal health and leads to mobility, stability and ultimately the success of a life lived more fully and actively.”

During National Chiropractic Health Month 2021, CSRI members will provide information on exercise and steps to take toward muscle and joint health, low back pain prevention, better posture, and improved balance.

All natural and without prescription medications, chiropractic has been found to be beneficial for numerous conditions above and beyond neck and back pain. Some of those include: headaches, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel, colic, and stress, just to name a few. For a complete list of conditions that can be improved with chiropractic and to find a local Rhode Island chiropractor, visit www.richiro.org.

The Toothboss Expands Dental Hygiene Offering to Include Periodontal Care

South Weymouth, MA, Sep 15, 2021 -/DailyVoice/- Dr. Richard Wolfert, DMD, a South Weymouth, MA dentist, recently announced the addition of expanded dental hygiene services at The Toothboss, the name of his South Weymouth, MA dental practice located at 1121 Main Street (Route 18).

Additional hygiene services being offered include very close scrutiny by his hygiene team to evaluate and treat inflamed and diseased periodontal pockets.

“When a patient’s brushing and flossing isn’t removing plaque thoroughly on a consistent basis OR a patient hasn’t had a cleaning for a prolonged period of time, their gum tissue becomes very inflamed,” said Dr. Wolfert. “Bacteria can settle in the cuff of gum tissue that surrounds the tooth, causing the periodontal pocket to be deeper than it should be and the plaque containing bacteria cannot be removed with conventional cleaning methods like daily brushing or flossing.”

Continued Dr. Wolfert, “The treatment provided is an attempt, with the patient’s cooperation, to avoid a trip to the gum tissue specialist for more extensive periodontal therapy, which, many times, involves laser or surgical treatment. With our new expanded hygienist services, we can treat those damaged periodontal pockets in house.”

Typically, this type of appointment takes more time, and, in some cases, anesthesia (Novocain) is required to make it a more comfortable process.

For more information on hygiene services provided by The Toothboss, you can visit Dr. Wolfert’s website at www.toothboss.com or call 781-335-0604.

About The Toothboss:
The Toothboss offers: comprehensive examinations (written treatment and treatment plan provided); cosmetics; crowns, bridges and tooth-colored restorations; partial and full dentures; periodontics (early cases treated); oral surgery; restoration of conventional and small diameter implants; and emergency services (24-hour emergency phone number available).

The Toothboss accepts most insurance plans. They also accept payment from most PPO and indemnity plans, including Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Delta Dental. They also accept all major credit cards and have arranged payment plans through Springstone.

Critical, Life Saving Information When You Need It Most

One of the biggest problems in the world of emergency services is the fact that when medical professionals first get to the scene, they have no way of identifying the patient(s), and when they do, they do not have access to any sort of medical information on the patient, nor any allergies that they might have. This is where ICE-TAGS comes in to save the day!

ICE-TAGS is a Cape Town-based company who is here to improve the efficiency as well as success rate of the emergency services. The company manufactures lifesaving wristbands that have critical information on them that first responders should know about. The ICE-TAGS wristband will include information such as the name and surname of the patient, any sort of allergies that they might have, as well as any past or current medical conditions that they have been struggling with. This allows the first responders to acquire all of the information that they might be needing to start saving the person’s life!

The company’s founder, Len Nieuwoudt, has been involved in the security and survival industries since the early 90s, hence he has been working closely with medical institutions, as well as in medical situations where safety, medical, and security risks are often encountered. While in the industry, Len noticed that there was a lack of access to medical information when it was needed most. As a result, he started ICE-TAGS so that it could speak for the patient when they aren’t able to.

762MED with ICE-TAGS caters for all age groups in terms of sizing, style designs, colours, and even applications. Besides putting their stamp of approval on the exceptional quality of each and every one of their products, they are also fashionable, funky, corporate, feminine, or even rough and tough!

If you would like to learn more about the company, browse through their wide range of ICE-TAGS medical information holders, or if you would like to contact someone to find out more information, then do not hesitate to visit their official website at: https://ice-tags.co.za/

About ICE-TAGS:
ICE-TAGS was founded by Len Nieuwoudt back in the early 90s due to the fact that he noticed that there was a lack of access to medical information when it mattered most. He started the company so that the ICE-TAGS’ medical IDs could speak for patients when they are unable to themselves.

Shea Berigan Named The Toothboss Smiling Neighbor

South Weymouth, MA, August 5, 2021 -/DailyVoice/- As a member of the Hingham High School lacrosse team, Shea Berigan has amassed more than 100 points in her career. Yet its off the field where She has earned the most points as a volunteer for the South Shore Special Needs Athletic Partnership (SNAP). Along with her teammates, she’s taught special needs individuals how to play lacrosse in weekly clinics and as a summer camp counselor. For that Berigan has been named the recipient of The Smiling Neighbor award given by South Weymouth Dentist Dr. Richard Wolfert, DMD.

Shea’s sister Avery has been a participant in the SNAP for a number of years (their mother Pamela Berigan is on the SNAP board of directors). The clinics and camps are just part of the efforts Shea has been involved with. She’s been part of a number of fundraisers for the organization.

“It’s been an amazing experience being involved with SNAP. But by far the most enjoyable part for me was teaching lacrosse to participants,” said Berigan. “It’s not the easiest sport to learn. Everybody put forth a great effort and you saw a smile on everyone’s face before, during and after. There was a real sense of community.”

Established in 2014, South Shore SNAP (www.southshoresnap.com) offers a variety of after-school and weekend athletic and recreational activities. SNAP also offers a five-week summer program so that children with special needs can spend their afternoons having fun with friends.

“Shea’s accomplishments in volunteering for SNAP are impressive enough on their own,” said Dr. Wolfert. “Couple that with her accomplishments on the lacrosse field and she certainly is a worthy recipient of the Smiling Neighbor Award.” For being selected as the Smiling Neighbor, Kelly had the choice of either a $50 gift card to Stockholders or a tooth whitening kit. Shea chose the whitening kit.

The Smiling Neighbor award is given out on a quarterly basis to citizens of Weymouth going above and beyond the call of duty for their fellow citizens. People can nominate a Smiling Neighbor by sending an e-mail of 200 words or less to toothboss1@aol.com. Please remember to include your name and telephone number as well as the name and telephone number or e-mail of the person they are nominating. Nominations can also be sent to The Toothboss, 1121 Main Street, South Weymouth, MA 02190.

Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga to Hold A Teacher Training at Discovery Yoga September 24-27, 2021

St. Augustine, FL, Aug 5, 2021 -/DailyVoice/- Brenda Yarnold will hold a Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga (LVCY) Teacher Training Certification at the Hampton Inn, Vilano Beach, Saint Augustine, Florida September 24-27, 2021, in conjunction with Discovery Yoga.

This LVCY training is for yoga teachers, yoga practitioners, and healthcare/fitness professionals who are interested in senior fitness, disabled fitness, and exercise for anyone who, for whatever reason, cannot do regular exercise.

In this certification, Brenda trains participants to give a one-hour therapeutic chair yoga class with special emphasis on disabled and senior fitness. She teaches how to individualize postures by adapting them to differing levels of flexibility. These levels of flexibility set this program apart.

Participants come away with the skill to adapt, on their own, yoga mat poses to the chair with the varying levels of flexibility (what LVCY terms Chairasanas – asana being Sanskrit for pose or posture).

Participants learn the five variations of LVCY: Single Chair Yoga, Double Chair Yoga, Pair Chair Yoga, Wheelchair Yoga, and Weighted Chair Yoga. The last is targeted at building bone and muscle mass by using 1–3-pound dumbbells during Chairasanas. This addresses a major fitness issue of sedentary people such as seniors, the disabled, the overweight, and all of us who just sit too much.

Among the Chairasanas participants learn are the sun salutation, the moon salutation, the earth salutation, the warrior series, and classical balance postures. They receive an anatomy overview and a review of the contraindications & precautions for seated poses. In addition, other Eastern modalities are covered.

Program participants receive a 200-page illustrated manual, a certificate for 25 hours of LVCY teacher training, access to additional training materials and leads for LVCY teachers.

Brenda Yarnold, M.A., E-RYT 200, E-LVCYTT, has always desired to help others, particularly those who may feel challenged in their bodies from illness, weight issues, age, or otherwise. Brenda was certified in Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga in August 2014, after which she knew she found her path of bringing yoga to every-body. After Brenda served Lead Assistant for seven certifications, she earned her E-LVCYTT and Co-Director designations. She is trained in functional anatomy and is earning her 300-hour Yoga Therapy certification. Brenda has a compassionate, non-judgmental training style. Following in Lakshmi’s footsteps, her programs are challenging yet fun.

Making History: First South African Biotech Ever to Achieve EU Biocidal Registration

Johannesburg, South Africa, July 8, 2021 -/DailyVoice/- At the end of a very long, very expensive five years of testing and following a rigorous, strict application process, Biodx has finally achieved EU registration* for their b bioactive™ (DECONT-X™) disinfectant technology.

“It’s been a daunting road but one where the end was only possible with the help of a dedicated team, whose assistance made this dream a reality. Dr Mark Kelly, Biodx’s Chief Scientist who has been with me every step of the way, scientist Dr Jan Reynhardt, CEO of GrnCAT Holdings, together with Dr Lucia Steenkamp, principle scientist at the CSIR and her team, who offered irreplaceable guidance throughout the research,” says Burt Rodrigues, proud CEO of Biodx.

“We’re also indebted to The Netherlands Organisation (TNO) who carried out the vital test work needed to meet the extremely strict levels of acceptance for this registration, together with Triskelion (Netherlands) who painstakingly prepared the necessary dossiers and followed through with the regulators.

“We also can’t forget the DST (Department of Science and Technology), IDC (Industrial Development Council) and the TIA (Technology Innovation Agency) who initially helped us get this project off the ground.”

What this means to Biodx

“Above all this now gives us access to the European industrial biotech markets – only registered products may be sold in the EU – which with our product being proven and accredited in the EU against SARS-CoV-2 sees us poised for a successful entry, showing that South Africa can hold its own in this field.

“We started this journey in 2016, knowing there was a steep climb in front of us. But it’s much more than just having the finance to throw at it. You need to keep the faith for the dark periods. It was a painstaking process of following the regulatory process, step by step, until you reach the top of that hill. Today it’s truly humbling that this ten year registration conclusion is finally here, opening doors we only dreamed of. This is our first step in trading in the European market and hopefully the first registered dossier of many to come.
